Senior Estimator

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Estimator to join our client based in Hamilton Wentworth, Ontario. The ideal candidate should be responsible for the accurate, timely preparation of multiple construction estimates and budgets of varying complexity and size for our clients. This position plays a key role in helping the team maintain its leading reputation in the industry and in continuing its rapid growth. The Senior Estimator estimates conceptual design-build, cost plus, lump sum and construction management projects, as well as works with the project team through to project design, tendering and vendor procurement.

Responsible For

  • Prepare detailed budgets and estimates for Design-Build and CM projects, including all soft-cost elements such as assumptions, commentary, risk considerations, scheduling impacts, and presentation materials
  • Lead Design-Build and CM pursuits by reviewing RFP documents, supporting proposal development, preparing and delivering presentations, coordinating design teams, and negotiating contracts
  • Manage the procurement of subcontractors and consultants, including prequalification, tender package development, bid solicitation, analysis, leveling, award recommendations, and contract negotiations
  • Develop clear and comprehensive subcontractor scopes of work and bid documents, and coordinate with vendors to obtain pricing for materials and services
  • Coordinate project requirements with architects, engineers, consultants, and construction teams to ensure constructability, alignment, and integration across all disciplines
  • Conduct site visits and oversee the review and approval of drawings, specifications, and design documentation throughout the preconstruction and delivery phases
  • Maintain and update costing databases to support accurate future estimates, proactively manage tenders and RFIs, and track procurement information
  • Participate in project risk identification and mitigation strategies during the preconstruction phase to protect Company interests
  • Support post-project reviews by comparing estimated budgets to actual costs and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement

Specific Skills

Technical Skills:
  • Proven experience in welding and fabrication is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Construction Estimator within a GC and/or Design-Build GC environment, with a proven track record of successfully awarded projects
  • Strong experience estimating ICI facilities, including site development, building envelope, and mechanical and electrical systems, with completed project values ranging from approximately $250K to $100M
  • Proven ability to prepare both high-level conceptual budgets and detailed, line-item estimates from preliminary designs through fully developed construction documents
  • Demonstrated experience leading Design-Build RFP processes, coordinating consultants, and supporting multiple delivery methods including Construction Management, Cost Plus, Stipulated Sum, and Design-Build
  • Proficiency with estimating and project management software, including PlanSwift, Procore, and Microsoft Excel
  • Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Site Superintendents, architects, engineers, subtrades, and vendors to confirm scope, pricing, and constructability
  • Highly effective negotiator with the ability to drive timely responses from subtrades and suppliers and maintain strong client and vendor relationships
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates concurrently across varying sizes and levels of complexity.

Educational Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management required
  • PQS / CEC designation, or progress toward it, and Gold Seal Certification are considered assets
